NO nation likes locking itself in, but an “immediate” shutdown for “a few weeks” could end the broadcast cycle in India, said Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, one of Covid’s most trusted voices in the world. He said to take “immediate, moderate and far-reaching” critical steps to get out of this “very difficult and desperate” situation.

Dr. Fauci, I want to focus this interview on prescriptive solutions as I analyze the situation in India. If, hypothetically, you have been hired by the government, what (would you say) are the most important things that need to be done?
The only thing I don’t want to do, and I hope it doesn’t, is to get into some kind of criticism about how India handled the situation because then it becomes a political problem and I don’t. I want to do this because I am a public health person and not a political person.
It just seems to me that India is currently in a very difficult and desperate situation. Interview, I saw a clip from CNN … it seems to me that it is a desperate situation. So when you have such a situation you need to look at the immediate absolute.
I mean, first of all, I don’t know if India created a crisis group that comes together and starts organizing things. I heard some people on the street taking their mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers with them in search of oxygen. They seem to believe that there really wasn’t just any organization, no central organization.
The first thing you need to do is first see what you can do immediately at this point. What can you do in two weeks in between? One of the things that you can do to avoid this prolongation.
For Example, you have vaccinated people at this point, which is absolutely necessary, you have to do, it is important, it will not alleviate the immediate problem of people taking oxygen need, they need hospitalization, they need medical help. I’m not going to fix it now because if you vaccinate people today it will be a few weeks before you will have an easier time preventing other people from getting sick.
So now take care of the people. I think you have to get some sort of commission or emergency group to come up with a plan on how to get oxygen. how we get supplies; how we get the drugs and, perhaps with the help of WHO, call countries.
